How are cars transported?

Transporting a car from abroad is a process that one might underestimate, considering it simple, but this is a mistake. It is a very important stage of the import because a wrong choice can cause delays or even financial damage due to poor handling by the carrier.

Let's start with the ways in which one can transport a car. Transport from any point in Europe can be done:

  1. By road from a driver or directly from the buyer.
  2. By motorcar.

So let's analyze the first case, of transporting the car by road:

In general, the cost of this mode of transport is very close to the cost of transporting it by car. To determine this, we should make a proper budget of expenses taking into account all the expenses, without forgetting the signs that will be needed to move to our final destination, our travel expenses both to the country where the car is located and the movements within that country, fuel, tolls, accommodation costs, possible ferry costs but also the total time that we will waste. The advantage of this mode of transport is its greater speed. However, the biggest disadvantage is the various risks to which we can be exposed, mainly the risk of an accident. We may be very careful, but the same is not true for everyone who moves with us on the same road as us. So what will happen in the event of an accident? Besides, we cannot rule out the risk of a mechanical failure that may occur on the road, in the middle of nowhere, in a foreign country. Is such an adventure worth the effort?

The second way is carriage transport:

When someone initially enters the process of searching for a transport company, it is natural to start the search based on its price, which is wrong. The differences in transport costs between transport companies can be in the order of €50, €100 or €150. But who would choose a cheap transport company, which in order to reduce transport costs, will:

a. He drove his car uninsured.

b. He transported his car in cooperation with several carriers: For example, from point A to point B, carrier X transports it, who then transfers it to carrier Y, who transports it to point C and then delivers it to… carrier O and so on? If anything happens during the transport, e.g. a scratch on the car, then how will we be able to find a solution? Who will take responsibility?

c. He transported his car but did not take care to receive the necessary documents for importation.

d. He delayed the delivery of the car for weeks.

The choice of method of transporting the car from the point of sale to its final destination should be made with particular care, mainly based on the quality the carrier who will respect our property and transport the car quickly and safely.

Finally, there are cases of very special cars, such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale below, which require special transportation, away from prying eyes and at the highest possible speed. In this case, more specialized means of transportation and an insurance policy from a leading insurance company regarding the specific transportation are required.

Important Notes

Transportation Option: Choosing the right shipping company is crucial. Price alone is not enough – quality and reliability are equally important.

Insurance: Never choose a carrier that does not offer full insurance coverage. The cost of repair in the event of damage can be very high.

Documents: Make sure that the carrier will receive and transport all necessary documents for customs clearance.
