How are cars transported?

OR car transport from Europe is a process that many underestimate, considering it simple. However, this is a mistake. It is a very important stage of import because a wrong choice can cause delays or even financial damage due to poor handling by the carrier.

Let's start with the ways in which one can transport a car. Transport from any point in Europe can be done:

  1. By road (by you or a driver)
  2. By railcar (Loaded)

Transporting the car by road:

Transporting the car by road is a feasible option and has its pros and cons.

What are the advantages of transporting a car by road?;

  1. The most important advantage for someone who wants to import a car and physically transport it to Greece is the issue of cost transportation. Transporting it by road usually costs around 1000 € and depends on the distance from the pickup point to your home.
  2. The second advantage is the speed transportation. By choosing this method, it is possible to transport it to Greece within a few days, about one week.

What are the disadvantages of transporting a car by road?;

The subject of security of transportation is the biggest disadvantage. Do you trust a driver you obviously don't know to drive the Mercedes, Range Rover, BMW... that you just bought? The driver-transporter may be the best driver there is, but what happens if an accident occurs while driving the car to Greece, regardless of who is at fault? Let's take the good scenario that the person responsible for the accident is not the driver-transporter. Did you check? and you paid more to buy an accident-free car and in the end you end up with a car that ends up being delivered to you crashed? In the case that the driver-transporter is at fault, who will bear the cost of the repair? This scenario sounds disastrous. Was it worth it to save, for example, 400 € to go on such a big adventure?;

Car transport by car trailer.

Let's look at the pros and cons of transporting your car by car trailer.

What are the advantages of car-trailer transportation?;

Maximum safety: Upon receipt of the car, we photograph it so that there is proof of the condition of the car upon receipt.

Full insurance coverage. From the moment of loading your car is insured in Allianz until we deliver it to your home. After that, the car does not have license plates and is not allowed on public roads.

Reasonable cost: The average transportation cost is usually around €1400.

What does the cost of transportation by railcar depend on?;

This cost depends on:

  1. The point of sale of the car is influenced by both how far away the car is and how “convenient” the specific area is. There are areas in Germany with very low traffic in terms of car trade. In this case, for example, a car trailer may have to travel 300 + 300 km to pick up a car, which will naturally increase the cost of transportation.
  2. The size of the car. When transporting, we essentially pay for space. It does not matter in the cost of transportation whether we import a car worth €7,000 or a car worth €30,000 since they will occupy the same space in the car trailer. If we want to transport, for example, a Mercedes Sprinter which is long and tall (L2, H2) we understand that it can occupy two or even three places in the car trailer. It is natural that the cost of transportation will be high.
  3. Precise transportation method. We can follow the standard method described above or we can also go for a special transportation. If for example you bought a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche then you may want to choose the special (like the Ferrari SF90 in the photo) transportation with a special transportation platform. In this case the cost is many times higher than the above and can reach figures such as €5000 or more. In this case we are talking about a completely specialized transportation where we can satisfy even the most demanding buyer.

What are the disadvantages of carpooling?;

The disadvantages of transporting your car by car trailer are:

  1. Cost: It is a little more expensive than road transport (it is affected by the factors we saw)
  2. Duration: Car transport companies are committed to delivering your car within a maximum of three weeks. Usually the delivery time is less than two weeks.

What should we pay attention to when choosing a company?

When choosing a company for car transport from Europe, you should check her profile and experience. Don't get caught up in small price differences (e.g. €150), because in the end "cheap risks becoming expensive".

  1. Full insurance: Full insurance is provided for the transport of your car.
  2. Direct transfer: The car is transported entirely by the transport company. There are cases where the vehicle is transshipped from carrier X to carrier Y and then to carrier O. If a scratch occurs, no one will take responsibility.
  3. Legal documents: He will receive the car with all the necessary documents for import.
  4. Time commitment: There is a clear commitment to the delivery date.

Finally, there are cases of very special cars, such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale below, which require special transportation, away from prying eyes and at the highest possible speed. In this case, more specialized means of transportation and an insurance policy from a leading insurance company regarding the specific transportation are required.

Important Notes

Transportation Option: Choosing the right shipping company is crucial. Price alone is not enough – quality and reliability are equally important.

Insurance: Never choose a carrier that does not offer full insurance coverage. The cost of repair in the event of damage can be very high.

Documents: Make sure that the carrier will receive and transport all necessary documents for customs clearance.
